Miami-Dade County courts
- Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building, 1351 N.W. 12th Street, Miami, is the main criminal courthouse, about 23 miles straight-line from Adam’s office. Felony and misdemeanor first appearance hearings are normally held there.
- Misdemeanors and criminal traffic charges, including DUI, are heard by county court criminal judges at the Gerstein building and at five branch courthouses: the Harvey Ruvin Justice Center, the South Dade Justice Center, Miami Beach, Hialeah and Coral Gables.
Who prosecutes and who arrests
- The Miami-Dade State Attorney, Katherine Fernandez Rundle, prosecutes state crimes in the county.
- The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office became the county’s main law enforcement agency in 2025, when the former Miami-Dade Police Department became a sheriff’s office. City police departments also make arrests within their cities.
DUI in Miami-Dade
A Miami-Dade DUI arrest follows the same Florida law as Broward: a criminal charge in county court and an administrative license suspension with a 10-day deadline. See DUI defense, breath test refusal and Florida DUI penalties.
Federal cases
Federal crimes in Miami-Dade are prosecuted in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the same district where Adam is admitted. See federal criminal defense.
