Families and young people
Cases involving teenagers and parents, such as underage drinking at a party, a school incident or a first arrest, need careful handling. In 2011, when the Sun Sentinel reported on Coral Springs’ proposal to fine parents who allow underage drinking at home, it quoted Adam about a case in which he represented a set of parents; prosecutors had originally asked for jail, and the judge ordered court costs only. Every case is different. Read the news story and about juvenile defense.
Florida law makes it a crime for a person who controls a home to allow an open house party where minors possess or drink alcohol or drugs, if the person knows and fails to take reasonable steps to stop it. A first violation is a second-degree misdemeanor.
