Adam's office at 110 SE 6th Street sits across the street from the Broward County courthouse and a few blocks from the Main Jail. If you or someone you love was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, here is what happens next.

A downtown office, steps from the courthouse

Adam D. Harmelin, P.A. is at 110 SE 6th Street, Suite 1700, in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Broward County Judicial Complex, also called the Central Courthouse, is across SE 6th Street at number 201, about a tenth of a mile away. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail at 555 SE 1st Avenue is a similar distance, and the federal courthouse at 299 East Broward Boulevard is about half a mile north. For a client, that means a lawyer who can be at the jail, the courthouse or a hearing quickly.

Who makes arrests in Fort Lauderdale

  • Fort Lauderdale Police Department. The city has its own police department, headquartered at 1300 W. Broward Boulevard, which patrols the city.
  • Broward Sheriff’s Office. BSO runs the county jails and has its own DUI Unit, including a DUI Task Force that runs checkpoints and a breath alcohol testing program with a mobile testing truck.
  • Florida Highway Patrol. FHP Troop L covers Broward County through its Davie District.

After an arrest in Fort Lauderdale

  1. Booking. Most people arrested in Fort Lauderdale are booked through the BSO Main Jail on SE 1st Avenue. Family members can find someone in custody with BSO’s online arrest search or by calling (954) 831-5900.
  2. First appearance. If the person is not released on bond, a judge sees them within 24 hours. Broward first appearances are held in Room 4155 of the courthouse West Tower at 201 SE 6th Street, with the person appearing by video from the jail. Hearings run at 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on weekdays, and 8:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays. A lawyer can be there to argue for release.
  3. The State Attorney’s decision. The Broward State Attorney’s Office, which has its main office in the same courthouse complex, decides what to charge. This is the pre-file stage, when a lawyer can sometimes persuade the prosecutor not to file. See criminal defense.
  4. Court. Felony cases are heard in the courthouse’s North Building. Misdemeanor and criminal traffic cases are heard by county court criminal judges, and misdemeanors from Fort Lauderdale police are filed here. Every DUI case in Broward, from any city, is filed at this courthouse.
