Arrests in Lighthouse Point
The Lighthouse Point Police Department is at 3701 NE 22nd Avenue, about 12 miles straight-line from Adam’s office. Besides road patrol, the department has a Marine Patrol Unit of officers who patrol the city’s waterways, enforce marine laws and handle boating safety.
Where Lighthouse Point cases are heard
Broward assigns misdemeanor cases to a courthouse by the arresting agency, and Lighthouse Point is an exception in the north of the county.
- Misdemeanors brought by the Lighthouse Point Police Department are filed at the Central Courthouse, 201 SE 6th Street in Fort Lauderdale, not at the North Regional Courthouse that serves Coconut Creek, Margate and Hillsboro Beach.
- DUI cases are filed at the Central Courthouse as well, as every Broward DUI is.
- Felonies are heard at the Central Courthouse.
- Traffic tickets that are not crimes are the one difference. Civil infractions from Lighthouse Point police are heard at the North Regional Courthouse in Deerfield Beach.
For a criminal case, that puts court across the street from Adam’s office.
On the water
Boating under the influence (BUI) is a separate crime from DUI, under section 327.35 of the Florida Statutes, and Adam lists it among the charges he defends. If you were stopped by the marine patrol, call before you discuss the stop.
The first 24 hours
The Broward Sheriff’s Office runs the jails. Anyone held after an arrest sees a judge at first appearance within 24 hours, by video to Room 4155 of the Central Courthouse West Tower, at 8:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays. BSO’s online arrest search and (954) 831-5900 can locate someone in custody.
DUI and your license
A DUI arrest starts a 10-day deadline on your license. The Broward Bureau of Administrative Reviews office is in Lauderdale Lakes, and the request can be emailed. See DUI defense and Florida DUI penalties.
