Hillsboro Beach Criminal Defense and DUI

Hillsboro Beach is a small barrier-island town with its own police department, on land and on the water. Adam defends people arrested in Hillsboro Beach, on the road or on a boat, from his office about 13 miles south in Fort Lauderdale.

Arrests in Hillsboro Beach

The Hillsboro Beach Police Department is at 1210 Hillsboro Mile, about 13 miles straight-line from Adam’s office. The town sits on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, and the department patrols with marked cars, bicycles, an ATV and a police boat. Its Marine Unit, started in 2008, responds to incidents on the town’s waterways and enforces boating laws.

On the water

Boating under the influence (BUI) is its own crime under Florida law, section 327.35 of the Florida Statutes, separate from DUI, and a refusal to take a breath, blood or urine test after a BUI arrest carries its own penalties. Adam lists BUI among the charges he defends. If you were stopped on the water near Hillsboro Beach, call before you talk about the case with anyone.

Where Hillsboro Beach cases are heard

  • Misdemeanors brought by the Hillsboro Beach Police Department are filed at the North Regional Courthouse, 1600 W Hillsboro Blvd in Deerfield Beach, about 3 miles from the police station.
  • DUI cases are filed at the Central Courthouse, 201 SE 6th Street in Fort Lauderdale, under the order that sends every Broward DUI there. Adam’s office is across the street.
  • Felonies are heard at the Central Courthouse.

The first 24 hours

The Broward Sheriff’s Office runs the county’s jails, so an arrested person is booked into BSO custody. If not released on bond, they see a judge at first appearance within 24 hours, by video from the jail to Room 4155 of the Central Courthouse West Tower. Dockets run at 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays.

DUI and your license

A DUI arrest on the road starts a 10-day deadline to act on your license. The Broward Bureau of Administrative Reviews office is in Lauderdale Lakes, and the request can be emailed. See DUI defense.
