Arrests in Hialeah

The Hialeah Police Department is headquartered at 5555 East 8th Avenue, about 18 miles straight-line from Adam’s office, closer than downtown Miami. Its non-emergency number is 305-687-2525. A person arrested in Hialeah is booked by Miami-Dade Corrections at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK), 7000 NW 41 Street. Booking can take several hours, and bond information may not be available until it is finished. Anyone still held sees a judge at first appearance, normally at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building in Miami.

Hialeah cases in court

  • The Hialeah Branch Courthouse is at 11 East 6th Street, about 3 miles south of police headquarters. It is one of the five branch courthouses where Miami-Dade county court criminal judges sit, and it is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Parking is limited; there is a paid garage across the street behind City Hall.
  • Misdemeanors and criminal traffic charges, including DUI, are heard by county court judges, at the Gerstein building or a branch courthouse. Your paperwork names the courthouse and the division judge, so check it before assuming your case is in Hialeah.
  • Felonies are heard by circuit court judges at the Gerstein Justice Building, 1351 NW 12th Street in Miami, about 7 miles from Hialeah police headquarters.
  • Prosecution is handled by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.

DUI arrests in Hialeah

A Hialeah DUI starts a criminal case and a license suspension. You have 10 days from the arrest to act on the license. The Bureau of Administrative Reviews office that serves Miami-Dade is temporarily closed to the public, and the hearing request can be sent by email. See the 10-day rule, Florida DUI penalties and DUI defense.

For a first DUI, the Miami-Dade State Attorney has a diversion program called Back on Track. Prosecutors decide eligibility, looking at criminal history, driving history and the circumstances of the arrest.
