Arrests in Parkland
Parkland contracts with the Broward Sheriff’s Office for police services. Its district office is at 6650 University Drive, about 16 miles straight-line from Adam’s office, and the courts list it as BSO District 17. The deputies who stop and arrest people in Parkland are BSO’s, and so are the jail and the DUI Unit, which runs a DUI Task Force for checkpoints and a Breath Alcohol Testing program using the Intoxilyzer 8000.
Where Parkland cases are heard
- Misdemeanors from BSO District 17 are filed at the North Regional Courthouse, 1600 W Hillsboro Blvd in Deerfield Beach, about 8 miles from the district office.
- DUI cases are filed at the Central Courthouse, 201 SE 6th Street in Fort Lauderdale, as every Broward DUI is. Adam’s office is across the street.
- Felonies are heard at the Central Courthouse.
Teenagers and first arrests
Many Parkland calls are from parents. A first arrest for underage drinking, a fight, a school incident or marijuana can follow a young person for years if it is handled badly. Broward’s State Attorney runs diversion programs, including a Misdemeanor Diversion Program for first-time offenders and juvenile alternatives such as civil citation, and eligibility is decided early. See juvenile defense and the Coral Springs page, where Adam was quoted on a parents’ underage drinking case.
The first 24 hours
BSO books arrested adults into its jail system. Anyone not released on bond sees a judge at first appearance within 24 hours, by video to Room 4155 of the Central Courthouse West Tower, at 8:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays. Use BSO’s online arrest search or call (954) 831-5900.
DUI and your license
A DUI arrest starts the 10-day clock on your license, handled by the Bureau of Administrative Reviews office in Lauderdale Lakes, by email request. See DUI defense and breath test refusal.
